Present day Aikido has its origins in Daito Ryu Aikijutsu, which has been passed down by generations of a distinguished Samurai family.

The founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, combined these highly effective means of attack and defence with Buddhist concepts of harmony in day-to-day living.  Thus he changed it from a way of killing to a way of life.

Prominent among his early protégés was Gozo Shioda, director and chief instructor of Aikido Yoshinkan. Officers of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police have been trained in the Yoshinkan system for more than 40 years.

Shudokan Aikido is based on Yoshinkan Aikido brought to the UK by Master Eddy Stratton.

Since his death the Barnstaple and Ilfracombe clubs, under Chris Challacombe have remained true to the original techniques, gradings  and practices.
